Interesting View: Peanut Cross Contact

Okay, now this is an odd way to view peanut cross contact risks, but I stumbled upon the National Peanut Board website seeking additional information regarding peanut shell in fireplace logs.  I discovered their link to New Peanut Products.  At the top of the list were Honey Maid® Grahamful crackers!  The same brand we sometime use.  A red flag shot up immediately as I wondered if the variety I purchase is now cross-contaminated with peanut butter in the same factory?

The site offered a comprehensive list of new peanut flavored products made by Earth Family, Cheerios, etc..  It was actually quite interesting and gave me a fast glance at what cross contact issues might be coming my way.  Therefore, visiting this site might provide us all with a new way of staying on top of manufacturers and cross contact risks that are not printed on the label.  This was a good reminder to me to keep on calling manufacturers, even if my family has been using a product for a very long time.

Happy food allergy Label Reading!

Was your understanding that the peanut only affected the grahamfuls, or all graham crackers that were honey maid brand? I can understand the grahamfuls being connected to peanut because the picture on their web page has the peanut butter chocolate flavor. We buy this brand of regular graham crackers, but I’m willing to make my own if need be!

Rachel, what I do is that as soon as I see a company
producing an allergenic item my radar goes up thinking there might be a cross. Contact issue. Then I call the manufacturer to find out if there is an issue..or not.
Sometimes the new products are made in new facilities and there are no issues

Ugh! What a minefield. Of interest to everyone is that the FDA is seeking input on setting possible threshold doses for major food allergens as well as preventative controls. I realize a lot of people may not know exactly how to respond to this open input request. However, FARE is now seeking open input from the food allergy community to shape how FARE responds as an organization to the FDA’s request after they have compiled input from experts and community members alike. I encourage all to take the brief FARE survey to have a say in how FARE will respond. I have no doubts that the FDA will take FARE’s input quite seriously. I long for the day of more transparency in food manufacturing! And your current post makes it that much more obvious that something needs to be done. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/C25NVH8
